Remittances

The economic aspects of migration and their relation to development are undoubtedly important, namely because they have a tangible impact on the quality of human lives, often in the form of remittances. Remittances sent home may well deliver money for the education of children; they may also contribute to the desire for and purchase of commodities, generating an increased dependence on remittances from abroad. In turn, this dependence may generate new mobility and contribute to further widening the social gaps within the societies from which people migrate. Today's challenge lies in ensuring that people are not treated as economic commodities, in creating channels through which people may make the most of their hard earned money, and in creating stable national economies that are not dependent upon private migrant remittances.
