Gender equality

The role and importance of gender within the context of migration and development has become increasingly important, with a wealth of studies that suggest that women - crucial actors in successful social and economic development in their local communities - compose the majority of the world's poor. With particular attention being paid to the feminisation of migration over the last decades, dedicated commitment to those policies and initiatives that empower migrant women in both countries of origin and destination, address them as members of the diaspora, and that recognise and seek to strengthen their specific situation will positively impact efforts to foster development and address inequalities in countries of origin.
