EU pushing trans-African transport network

New York Times, 17 November 2008

Brief press release emphasising the need for improved infrastructure in order to lessen the flow of migration out of Africa.

TUNIS, Tunisia - The EU transport commissioner says European and African countries should work to build a single highway system connecting northern and southern Africa.

Antonio Tajani says a trans-African transport network would boost development now hampered by Africa's scarce and poorly maintained roads. Major highways would allow goods arriving by plane and boat to move far quicker around the continent.

Tajani also says improving life in Africa would help stem migration to Europe.

He was speaking Monday in Tunisia's capital at a meeting of transport officials from 10 nations around the Mediterranean rim.

He says Europe should help develop African infrastructure after the "errors, even horrors committed in the last century in Africa."
