International migration, development and the information society

International Organization for Migration (IOM), 14 February 2005

In many ways, international migration today is strongly influenced by the emergence of a global information society and by the broad availability of information and communication technologies (ICTs).

In an increasingly globalized world, international communication technologies are playing a large role in the migration cycle. These technologies are key to providing migrants and potential migrants with information about receiving countries, job opportunities there, immigration procedures and means of transportation. This information is not only convenient for migrants to know, but also serves as important means of protection, as it allows migrants to better understand the potential dangers of migrating and the dangers of human trafficking and smuggling. These technologies also allow for a continuous link between countries of origin and Diaspora communities, which helps to encourage the transfer skills as well as financial transfers, both which are crucial to development of countries of origin.
