Urban growth, migration and poverty reduction: A poverty assessment

Research making the connection between an increase in remittances and the reduction of poverty in Albania.

In recent years, Albania has seen a dramatic drop in the number of individuals living in poverty as a result of both increasing remittances and economic growth within the state. The greatest impact can be seen in urban areas of Albania, while rural areas remain extremely poor. This has been attributed to the continued low levels of education, large families, few remittances and the low productivity of small family run farms. Albania is now confronted not only with having to maintain economic growth, but must also put in to force policies which will help to curb the widening income and development gap between those in Urban and rural areas.
